An extract from Slavorum‘s seven great wonders of Bulgaria post
Bulgaria, a wonderful Slavic land, hidden in mountains of Southern Balkan Europe.
Perperikon and Tatul
The ancient Thracian city of Perperikon is located in the Eastern Rhodopes, 15 km northeast of the present-day town of Kardzhali,on a 470 m high rocky hill, which is thought to have been a sacred place.
Perperikon is the largest megalith ensemble in the Balkans. It is thought that the famous sanctuary and
oracular shrine dedicated to Dionysus of the Bessi was situated there.
His amazing structure was discovered in April 2001. The acropolis is build out of a huge stone blocks, and the wall is 3 meters thick. It’s interesting that some of the stone altars were used for sacrificing humans and animals. The megalithic monument of Tatul is 35 km. away from Kardzali.
The place was used for sacrifices to the God of Sun, because of the direction of the monolith which points towards the Sun. For that reason the monument became known as the Bulgarian Stonehenge.
