The Rila Monastery
The Rila Monastery is the largest monastery in Bulgaria and one of the largest in South-Eastern Europe. It is snuggly located in the majestic venerable Rila Mountains at the elevation of 1,147 meters above sea level. For more than 10 centuries the Rila Monastery has been the center of worships dedicated to spirituality and beauty.
The monastery keeps impressive pieces of Christian arts. The main church building has the biggest gold-plate iconostasis in Bulgaria, decorated with amazing woodcarvings.
The monastery museum keeps the holy cross, made from a whole piece of wood by Master Raphael with one hundred and four religious sings and six hundred and fifty miniatures.
Legend has it that the Master worked on the cross for 12 years and lost his eyes on it while he finished it.
