An extract from Slavorum’s full 7 wonders of Bulgaria article:
The seven Rila lakes are the prettiest circ of seven lakes in Bulgaria. The lakes are two thousand and five hundred meters above sea level at the North – West part of the Rila Mountains. They are close to the town Dupnica which is 65 km. away from our capital city – Sofia.
The seven Rila Lakes
The lakes are terraced. The lower part of the circ is surrounded by beautiful flower meadows with pretty mountain flowers and bushes. The higher part is surrounded by majestic rocks which stand from centuries to the lakes.
The official numbering of the lakes is from top to the bottom and the names are as follows:
- The Tear
- The Eye
- The Kidney
- The Twin
- The Trefoil
- The Fish Lake and
- The Lower Lake.
Water in the lakes flows from one down to other and gives birth to the German river. When it is sunny and quite water in the lakes is calm and crystal-clear, but when it is stormy the lakes looked dark intimidating and turbulent. In winter they freeze and are covered with a thick layer of snow.
