Today someone shared a post in the Living In Bulgaria Facebook group about his car insurance that, on being stopped for a road check by the police, were found to not actually have been registered with the legal authorities over here. This meant that he had in fact, been driving for 11 months unknowingly uninsured!
How did this happen? – a clerical error that we would not normally even think about! You see when someone takes out insurance for their vehicle in Bulgaria, the company who you have bought the insurance from, has to register it with the guaranteed fund…. When that is done, then the cover is fully valid and your insurance will pay out in the case of a genuine claim. If the insurance has not been registered with the guaranteed fund, then you are not actually insured, despite having a sticker on your car window and an insurance document.
So how would you know if you are covered and all is OK or not?
Well, you can ask the insurance company to check while you are still in their offices or check yourself when you get home by going to this website page:
On this page you can enter a variety of information (all or just one piece like the registration number)
When you click search underneath you will see the details and as in this pic you can see there is now a green tick and it says the insurance is valid(under this are all the details including your insurance company name and policy number – so this is also a great way to get your information if you inadvertently loose your policy and need a copy
